TRAVEL GUIDE
Malaysia is 7 degrees north of the equator and has a typically tropical and humid climate with temperature averaging 30°C although cooler in the highland areas. Weather patterns vary according to region. Peninsular Malaysia is affected by monsoon winds from the north-east from October to May. Langkawi has a distinct wet season from April to October and Penang gets high rainfall in September/October. Rain tends to come in brief torrential downpours and can soon be replaced by bright sunshine
British passport holders do not require a visa for social or business visits. All visitors must have passport valid for 6 months beyond the intended date of departure and return or onward ticket
Vaccinations are recommended against polio, tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis A for visitors to Peninsula Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Penang and Langkawi
For travel outside cities and towns, vaccinations are further recommended against hepatitis B, rabies, Japanese B encephalitis, tuberculosis and meningitis. For visiting Sabah and Sarawak, malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended
The unit of currency is Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) with an indicative exchange rate GBP1 = MYR 6.5. Foreign currency can be converted at banks and money changers
The national language of Malaysia is Bahasa Melayu. English is the language of business and widely spoken. Cantonese is spoken by the Chinese population and Tamil and Hindi among the Indian population
