Seychelles a diverse destination with lots to see and do. As most visitors to Seychelles find, their time is spent outdoors enjoying the stunning tropical environment. Therefore, you may not want or need or want to stay in 5 star hotels all the time. While some guests wish to enjoy the luxury of top end hotels, others may wish to consider smaller local style hotels – to experience the best of the real Seychelles. The Seychelles Secrets!
Inner Island and Outer Islands Seychelles is designated into the inner islands and outer islands. The inner islands (Mahe, Praslin and La Digue) are the main inhabited islands. They are characterized by their high mountains surrounded by narrow coastal areas and fantastic beaches. The outer (coral) islands are flatter, sandy with lush vegetation and surrounded by beaches, your own private hideaway!
La Digue is the smallest of the inner islands and well worth a short stay for its very laid back atmosphere. The only mode of transport on the island is bicycle (readily available for hire). Accommodation is mostly small, quaint and rustic guest houses. La Digue is the most photographed island in Seychelles – you will understand when you get there!
Small Boutique Hotels Most of the hotels in Seychelles are small, boutique and owner managed hotels. They are very good standard, have fine restaurants offering delicious Creole and International cuisines and located in stunning settings on the beach. Such hotels include La Reserve, L’Archipel, Le Meridian Fisherman’s Cove, Coco de Mer Hotel & Black Parrot Suites, Acajou and Cerf Resort.
Seychelles Secrets Then there are the even smaller gems “Seychelles Secrets”. These can be small hotels with restaurant and bar or self catering accommodation. Such hotels, having up to 15 rooms, are owner managed with a high standard of cleanliness (Seychellois people are very house proud), décor and comfort. They have a truly authentic Seychelles feel and are very good value. Also definitely consider an island hopping holiday staying in these small hotels on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue to discover the true essence of Seychelles.
Hotels - International Chains International hotels include Four Seasons, Banyan Tree, Hilton and Le Meridien. There are further 5 star luxury independent hotels including MAIA, Sainte Anne Resort & Spa, Constance Lemuria Praslin and Labriz Silhouette.
Island Resorts There are 3 hotels located on their own individual (outer) islands - Denis, Desroches and Bird. Flight duration from the main island Mahe is 30 minutes to Denis and Bird and 1 hour to Desroches.
Denis Island Denis Island is rustic and chic with detached, secluded cottages each with its own stretch of beach and sun loungers. Lovely beaches surround the island, shady paths lead through the forest to discover endemic flora and fauna. Excellent for swimming, snorkeling, big game fishing and diving. They also have their own farm that provides fruit, vegetables, fresh milk, poultry and eggs for the enjoyment of guests.
Desroches Island Desroches is larger where guests have their own bicycles to discover the many deserted beaches. Junior Suites are semi-detached villa style units. There is a main restaurant and beach restaurant with thatched dining pavilions dotted along the beach; swimming pool and lovely vegetable/spice garden and farm (these are far away from the resort for you to visit by bicycle). Desroches offers exclusive diving and deep sea fishing if you fancy doing something more sporty.
Bird Island Bird, as its name infers a bird’s paradise. Bungalows set in the gardens along the beach are comfortable and simply furnished. Lovely beaches wrap round the island. Their restaurant serves wonderful authentic Creole food. Also, pay your respects to Esmerelda the oldest living giant tortoise in the world.
Utterly Exclusive North Island, Frégate Island Private and Cousine Island are the most exclusive hotels (prices to match!) located on the inner granitic islands – one hotel one island.
Frégate Island Private Frégate is the ultimate luxury getaway island in the Indian Ocean dedicated to protecting unique flora and fauna. This wonderful paradise of sandy beaches, tropical jungle and fruit plantations is just for a few – a celebrity hideaway! There are 16 luxury, private villas with pool - your dedicated butler to look after you 24 hours. An inclusive meal plan includes all meals, various complimentary water sports and land sports, hiking, guided tours, nature trails etc. There is a giant tortoise nursery and adoption program and you may also be able to watch sea turtles nesting
North Island A sanctuary founded on sustainable eco-tourism and dedicated to preserving endangered Seychelles flora and fauna. North Island is a fascinating hideaway with just 11 villas to be enjoyed by exceptionally privileged guests. The villas have been creatively crafted from wood, local stone and glass and thatched alang-alang roofs. There is a “no menu” concept where the chef proposes dishes to suit you. With beaches at four points of the compass the island provides a year round tropical beach holiday
Cousine Island Cousine is close to Praslin and has only 4 individual luxury villas that accommodate a maximum of 10 guests at any one time. Cousine is a private nature reserve with several endemic species. The kilometer long beach is a haven for breeding hawksbill turtles that usually come ashore to lay their eggs between September and January. Here you can also spot the Seychelles Magpie Robin, one of the rarest birds in Seychelles. The rich birdlife makes this island an ornithologist’s delight
